Challenges Faced By Geophysics Consultants

By Diane Wilson

Being a geophysicist pays well. However the job is faced with different challenges. To qualify to be a consultant, one must be prepared for any challenges before venturing in to the field. It is recommended to do a thorough research of the field before joining it. For young people or students planning to join geophysics consultants field, here are basically the challenges they might encounter.

Normally, these experts work in three different but related areas which include acquisition, interpretation, and processing. However, the job description varies in each stage. By use of geophysical techniques, geophysicists carry out environmental study on the land fill. The aim of carrying out this stage is to ensure that the land is fit for the project to commence. In case the land has underlying problems the consultants provide information on how the problem can be overcome.

When carrying out field activities, the consultant should ensure that the equipment used are working properly in order to avoid in accurate information. Lack of proper knowledge to how the machine operates can land one in to problems since one is held accountable for any threats caused due to in accurate information.

Sometimes these professional are forced to work even on the remote areas where some of the facilities are not available. This is where one must use their creativity and think independent to come up with a solution to the problem. During their line of duty geophysicists are responsible for fixing and carrying out repair for equipment which may not be functioning well.

When data has been collected it is the work of the consultant to map the data using 2D and 3D seismic data modeling tools. When collecting the data, the consultants are also expected to observe the recording tools and their behaviors for any irregularities. On the other hand, they further represent the collected data in a geological way that can be understood by other engineers.

The geophysics experts are also expected to work hand in hand with the engineers and managers and provide accurate information at the right time without delays. The collected data must be carefully analyzed well and presented in a well-organized manner to enable easy understanding. They also provide support and advice on the alternative ways of overcoming and solving minor issues that are thought to endanger lives.

The job requires one to be flexible enough and even be able to work under pressure and ensure accuracy has been maintained. This becomes sometimes a challenge when machines breakdown and one is expected to fix them and continue with their study.

Due to the activities they carry out, hiring geophysics experts can help the government save a lot of money on un-worth projects. As much as the career pays well, one must be good in mathematics, data tabulation, creative and flexible among others. They on the other hand ensure that proper laboratory tests and accurate result interpretation has been carried out in a well-organized manner.
