Simple Facts About Using Goats For Clearing Land

By Ann Thompson

So, you just bought a nice piece of land. It has beautiful views and many acres to build on or use for gardens or holding livestock. Of course, just like any other new purchases of farms, you have a lot of work to do to make it your own. One of the challenges may be that it has places that have not been cleared off for use. Whether it be a hillside or a flat area, it needs to be free of weeds and unwanted brush. You do have a few options, such as braving the brush to do it yourself, hire someone to do it or using goats for clearing land, which is one of the best options.

Control of weeds is just one of the reasons so many people have goats. They are animals that can be a help on farmland as well as be productive. Their milk is used in a few different ways.

When it comes to clearing land, using goats is a popular choice among many people, even those that do not have a farm. They can get to places, such as hillsides and around ponds. They are often immune to plants and weeds that are known to hurt or kill humans.

Before you run out and buy a goat, you need to remember an important fact. They are known to hang out in packs. A single goat will not be as happy as it would be if there were two of them. The plus to this is that if you have the room for two, they can keep twice as many weeds off the area they have access to.

Another thing to remember is that in order to get milk from a female goat, they have to become pregnant. They can keep producing milk for up to a year after having the kid, making it a very productive part of the farm family. Goat milk can make wonderful soaps and lotions. It is also known to sooth digestive issues in both young and older people. Talk to your doctor about your condition before trying any type of home remedy.

There is a certain breed of goat that has a small stature that produces as much, sometimes more, than a full sized goat. Known as a La Mancha, these are amazing producers of milk and is an excellent choice for those that do not have the room for two or more full sized animals.

They are also used to protect other livestock. In the past, fainting goats were used to protect the livestock of farmers that depended on their cattle to help feed their family. When a predator approaches them, they will fall on the ground motionless. This kept the predators mind on the goat instead of the livestock. Another way they protect livestock is by keeping chickens safe from snakes and other animals that are known to attack and kill chickens and other small animals.

There are many different breeds to choose from. To find the right one for your farming needs, you may have to do a little research. They are not only very good looking animals, they are useful animals to have around. Be sure that you have the land to house these animals before making any impulse buys.
