Useful Information Regarding Bender Boards

By Maria Graham

Various areas make a typical landscape. These areas include gardens, turf, flowerbeds, and walkways. To make the landscape more appealing, there must be a way of separating the various areas clearly. This is done by installing edging material that defines the borders clearly. The edging material that is used in this case is referred to as bender boards. There are several different edging materials in used and these boards are just a single example.

The boards are available in various materials. Wood is a good example of material commonly used to make them. Manufacturers also make boards from artificial materials that resemble wood, stone, and metal in appearance. Wood is considered a favorite material for making these products because it is natural and offers that natural appeal to landscaping.

One needs to start by deciding the length of the board they need to complete their project. One can use a piece of thread to easily determine the length of board will be enough. This should be done by running the thread along the length that the board is expected to cover when installed. The thread should be measured to determine how much of edging material to buy. Buying a little extra of the material is advisable in case it becomes necessary.

When running the thread along the edge, one should use stakes to achieve more accuracy. The stakes and boards can be bought easily and cheaply from any garden store in the US. There are many different kinds of this product in the market and that makes it necessary to choose wisely. One should ensure that their choice of edging material is appropriate for the landscape. The choice should be made based on the type and color of soil, type of plants, colors of driveway, and walkway.

Various factors may influence the choice of color. For instance, while some people may prefer considering the color of the walkway others go with the color of the house to match the color of the board bought. One can make the landscaping look different by installing different edging materials in different sections.

Products manufactured by different manufacturers are installed differently based on the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Generally, however, before one can use the board, they should have it soaked in water for hours. Soaking improves flexibility to allow the board to bend more easily around sharp curves. Not all edging materials need to be soaked before being used.

During installation, a trench of six inches in width should be dug. Depending on the product, the width can be more or less. The trench should go deeper than the height of the board. To help direct the boards during installation, one should have stakes planted in the trench 18 inches apart. The board should be installed on the outer side of the stakes.

Nailing of the board should be done on the upper part of the stakes after installation. One should ensure there is an overlap of about one foot when joining two boards to each other. One should consider trimming the ends of the edging material in places they overlap. This will ensure that the materials fit well together.
