The Benefits Of Ornamental And Liriope Grass

By Nancy Mitchell

The popularity of liriope is largely due to the fantastic colors of their flowers and the beautiful nature of the plant, and that is why so many people pick this genus above all others. It is known for staying low to the ground, which fits the style of some yards perfectly, and has a very grasslike quality to it. One main difference between this type of plant that came from South Asia and Southeast Asia is that it flowers once a year, and that is why so many people are now planting ornamental and liriope grass.

This plant gets its name from Greek mythology. A nymph with this same name was said to have given birth to the god Narcissus. It may have been simply the beautiful nature of this fairy that caused her name to be used for this plant.

There are many different ways that people pronounce the name liriope, but most people who know their plants will be able to understand what it is no matter how it is said. A lot of people like to call it lilyturf because of the flowers that bloom on the plant, but they are technically not in the same family as lilies or grasses. Monkey or spider grass are two other common names for it.

It is in the late summer that the flowers of these plants start to appear and open up. They are usually small in size and violet or blue in color, sometimes a combination of the two. There are also new varieties of these plants that have more flashy color patterns for situations in which there is a lot of shade passing over a yard or garden.

It is not hard to find a big selection of these types of grasses at most stores and nurseries, or even by shopping online. Since the demand has grown, most people have them in stock and are ready to provide whatever the customer is looking for. Ornamentals are considered any grasses or similar plants that are planted because of their decorative value.

People who live in areas that have a harsh climate for most plants due to the low temperatures sometimes have a hard time finding something to liven up their yard or garden with. More and more people in these areas are turning to ornamentals. This is because they are able to survive and sometimes even thrive in these kinds of conditions.

Although these plant are called grasses, this is not always technically what they are. Because of the way that they look, this is how a lot of these plants are defined. However, things like rushes, sedges, and cat-tails are not technically in the same genus as grasses are.

Perennial plants are known as the ones that don't stay active year-round. Rather, they store up energy for a dormant period in the fall and winter so that they can come back to life again in the early spring. This is how most plants that are considered ornamentals work, with a few exception of ones that are annuals, meaning they live for a year and then complete their life cycle.
