What To Consider When Implementing Residential Landscaping Project

By William Parker

Landscaping is one of the ways we can improve the value of our property, but most importantly improve the aesthetic and functional appeal. There are several ways you can achieve this. For instance, you can set up an eco-friendly garden in the front yard instead of a lawn. You can also design some beautiful walkways. Likewise, you can improve the backyard with carefully constructed outdoor kitchen, fire feature, and a pool among others. This can seem to be daunting tasks, however, when you have the right skills or look for the right person you can revamp your home. Here are some useful principles to apply in your residential landscaping project.

The first one is the law of significant enclosure. This one is more of a law than a rule, so this is absolutely critical while implementing your gardens. Typically, gardens should be enclosed. That is, creating a sense of refuge. This design law stipulates that we should be able to feel enclosed when the horizontal space is not more than three time the vertical edge of a space.

Another principle you should put more emphasis on is following the regulating line. The element of distinctive landscaping feature or architecture such as existing property, a tree or edges of the building can generate an imaginary line. This line will help you to organize and connect your design. When you do so, it will result in a cohesive and orderly garden.

In addition to the above, the golden rectangular rule should help you to proportionately layout items within the project area. It is a rule that has been practiced for decades. It requires that the ratio of the long and short side should be proportionate. Specifically, the ratio of short to long side can be equated to the ratio of long side with regards to the sum of long and the short side is 1:1.6. So, as you lay out different features such as lawns, terraces, patios, and arbors take this rule into consideration.

As you do plan for your project, know that size matters. Always try to go big. For instance, if you have a choice of constructing a pool shorter or longer, a staircase narrower or wider, always go with the bigger one. It might seem excessive at the moment but several years down the line time will prove you right.

A very important part of landscaping is the plants. So it is important to make the best out of it. When you are planting always start with the biggest them move gradually to the next biggest up to the smallest. This is important is ensuring that you implement your project without major hiccups. For instance, if you were to prepare your bed first before planting trees, then you might end up damaging the beautifully laid bed when planting the big trees.

Besides planting bigger first, you should also try to plant in masses. That is, try to plant several plants of a certain type in one area rather than having several species mixed together. It helps in creating a more striking appearance.

Finally, you have to put a lot of emphasis on ensuring that your plants are well planted. This is even more important than any of the above. Make sure that they are planted at the right height, and sufficiently sized.
