By Linda Peterson

Whether you've got formal gardens or something more casual, but equally impressive, you know how relaxing it can be to spend time alone tending to them or just sitting quietly. If you are thinking about making your little oasis even more enjoyable, by adding one of the garden water fountains NC homeowners love, you might be surprised at how easy and affordable it can be.

There are kits you can buy that include all the materials you need to create a completed fountain. The drawback with this option is that you will be limited in the flexibility of your design. You can also choose to design a structure unique to your lawn and your style. The materials necessary to make a fountain from scratch are available at home improvement and large hardware stores.

You should not do anything until you have found the perfect spot for the fountain. You need to remember to put it in the vicinity of a power source because you will need electricity to run the pumps. Some fountains use solar panels instead of electricity. When you are putting in one of these, you don't want to hide it under the trees.

A fountain is basically a series of basins connected to a base. A pipe or tube is fed from the base to the top basin. It requires one or two submerged pumps driven by motors. Some pumps are encased in filter boxes that keep debris from clogging them. You will have to install the pumps and connect them to the power source. Be sure not to turn the pumps on until you have filled the fountain.

In ground fountains have to be placed carefully. Once you have dug the hole, placed the liner in it, and installed the base, you have made a commitment to that particular spot. You do not want to place a solar paneled fountain under trees. You should test the soil to make sure it can accommodate the fountain.

You will simply fill your fountain once you have successfully installed it. The water will circulate continuously instead of running from a pipe. Evaporation will occur, so replenishing your reservoir will be necessary occasionally. You can fill the basin with what comes out of your tap, but it probably has minerals in it. You won't have the same problem with distilled water.

Where there is electricity and water, there is the possibility of a serious accident. You should take all safety precautions. That includes never touching an electrical element when your hands are wet. If you have small children, you will have to create some kind of barrier to the fountain. Kids can drown in a couple inches of liquid.

A fountain in your garden can be a source of great enjoyment. You could hire a professional to create a structure or buy a kit and do it yourself. You might also consider designing one and creating a unique addition to your home.
